Obituary of SUSAN ELIZABETH REICHARDT

SUSAN ELIZABETH REICHARDT It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Oma, and aunt, Susan, on October 26, at Donwood Personal Care home. Susan will be greatly missed by her children Paul Reichardt (Patricia), Joanne O’Leary ( Jeff ), and Diana Riedle ( Brian),and her beloved grandchildren , Zachary and Alyse Reichardt, Daniel Pearce, Stephanie Besselt - O’Leary, and Joseph and Christopher Riedle. Also mourning her death are her special nieces Susie Funk (Mike) and Barbara Funk. She will be remembered by relatives in Chicago, Germany and Austria. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph and her siblings Johann, Anna and Elisabeth. Susan was born in Deutsch Zerne, Yugoslavia, May 12, 1928. The youngest of four siblings, she had a happy childhood. World War 2 disrupted her life and her family was dispersed during the war. After the war she was reunited with her surviving family and moved to Canada to marry Joseph and begin a new life. Susan was actively involved in her church and cultural communities, never saying no to a cause or a request. She taught German at St. Joseph’s School and through the German Society. She was an active member of the St. Joseph’s CWL and the Kolping Society also serving on their executives. One of her proudest moments was serving as Ambassador for the Folklorama Majestic Alps pavilion. In her later years she enjoyed the Golden Agers group and singing with the Alpensaengers. Susan loved to travel. She spent many winters in Hawaii, and enjoyed visits with her relatives in Chicago. Susan was fortunate to return to her roots, spending four winters in Germany with her daughter and family. During this time she reconnected with many of her childhood friends and travelled throughout Europe. In her seventies, Susan took on a new challenge, becoming a host “Oma” to many international students through the University of Winnipeg. She loved the companionship and new experiences they provided. Sushi and kim bap were added to her culinary repertoire. She was a great lady who will be missed by many across the world. Susan had a special gift of making everyone feel cherished and welcome. She was an eternal optimist, even as her health declined. She was the epitome of grace. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 31 at 11am at St Joseph’s Church, Mountain Ave. and Andrews St. Private interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Donwood Manor or the charity of your choice.
